Getting a hefty slate of upgrades in 2009, the Saab 9-3 expanded its trim levels and performance enhancements. Body style choices include a hard top sedan with seating for five; a two-door, four-passenger convertible; and a five-door, five-passenger sport wagon. Standard on all trim levels, except the Aero, is a 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that cranks out 210 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, while the Aero trims boast a turbocharged 2.8L V6 engine capable of 280 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the base trim, while a five-speed automatic transmission is optional; however, all other trims come with either a five- or six-speed automatic transmission. Optionally, a manual transmission is available on the sportier trims. The Aero and the XWD trims are all-wheel drive, but the rest come in front-wheel drive. Fuel economy estimates range from a low of 15 mpg city/24 mpg hwy and 18 mpg in combined driving for the automatic Aero sedan or SportCombi to 19/29/23 mpg for the manual 2.0T sedan. Saab 9-3 standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability control, OnStar telematics, active head restraints and front-seat side airbags.
